The first rule in arranging the furniture in a livingroom is to see where the wall plugs are and to avoid covering them with any furniture. If you do that it will only make things more complicated, as you will not have easy access to the outlet and you will have to use extendable ones and this way you increase the hazard risk. So avoid covering them. The second tip is to spread the furniture in an even manner all over the livingroom. Avoid placing all the furniture in one place, for example one one side of the room or near the same wall, as it will be totally asymmetric and it will give the viewer the impression of a “sinking ship”. You remember the “Titanic”.
The smartest thing you can do for your small space: choose compatible furniture. Nothing adds visual clutter like over-sized pieces in a compact area. Try modular furniture instead! Pair two small ottomans to form one long coffee table. When it’s time to open up the room, move them to the side, or use them for extra seating.
Lastly, for a subtle addition to your design, consider adding bookshelves – built in options or standalone bookcases provide a great opportunity for displaying everything from your favorite classics to family photos or small décor pieces. Use decorative baskets and boxes as storage for children’s toys, remote controls and other items that may be littered about the room. For spaces that serve multiple roles, you should always be prepared with an adaptable design.
