Often times we receive emails, chats or calls where a customer wants to know how to start a Hosting Company or Service. Since cPanel helps it be so easy to get this done, their obvious choice is to use our Software to host websites for his or her clients, friends or family. A significant part of “branding” their service is to instruct their hosting customers to use custom nameservers that will need to be associated with their domain name.

What is a “nameserver” you may ask? Every website name that is used on the web needs to be registered. It doesn’t matter what the extension of the domain name is, the common requirement for all domain names is that it will need to have at least 2 nameservers assigned to it.

The function of a nameserver is to answer questions of web browser or email clients providing the Ip of the domain name. Nameservers are programs that run continually on Internet servers and either give the Ip of the query or point to another nameserver at an increased level that may have the answer.

This process continues until a “root” nameserver is reached that will have the answer when there is one to give. Every cPanel server has the ability to operate a nameserver program and can function as an Authoritative Nameserver for names of domain. Say that your domain name is “YourFabSite.com” and you also want to give your customers “ns1.YourFabSite.ns2 and com.YourFabSite.com” as the nameservers for their names of domain when they web host with you, you are able to do that!
