Ambitious programs to build a major airport near Koo Wee Rup have been described as Melbourne’s response to Sydney’s Badgerys Creek task. Paragon Premier Investment Fund has said it wants to construct the commercial airport terminal at a niche site between Koo Wee Rup and Lang Lang. The airport was said by it could be working cargo flights by 2020, followed by home and international services. Aviation consultant Neil Hansford, that has advised on airport development, said Melbourne needed a significant domestic airport to supplement Tullamarine, and Avalon Airport, near Geelong, could not fulfil that role because of its location. Melbourne’s south-east has been referred to as a much better location than Avalon for Melbourne’s No.2 airport terminal.
The authorities last month said it would build Sydney’s second major airport terminal at Badgerys Creek to service the city’s flourishing western suburbs, finishing years of dispute within the project. Avalon is an airport terminal, but it has not been able to appeal to overseas flights and serves only low-cost carrier Jetstar on routes to Sydney, Hobart, Adelaide and the Gold Coast. Melbourne Airport’s chief executive said the other day that Avalon was too near to Tullamarine to be Melbourne’s No.2 airport.
The airport terminal would initially be how big is Canberra Airport. However, he said there wouldn’t normally be demand for international flights or cargo from a south-eastern airport terminal for another 10 to 15 years. Paragon has said it desires to focus on cargo when the airport opens – particularly to ship fresh agricultural produce from Gippsland to overseas markets – and start passenger flights soon after.
The privately funded Wellcamp Airport in Toowoomba, Queensland, opened in 2014 with the intention of being a base for fresh food exports, while Qantas Freight is trying to establish shipments of fresh dairy from Tasmania to China. Noel Campbell, a dairy farmer whose Yannathan property is approximately eight kilometres of the suggested airport terminal site east, said nobody will need an airport terminal built on their doorstep. Mr Campbell said he doubted the demand for agricultural exports from the airport would have a significant impact on dairy products or horticulture farmers in the area.
Mr Hansford said a fresh produce business would only be practical if the planes brought produced goods to Australia on their inbound plane tickets. He said carrying those goods would be difficult from Koo Wee Rup, because Melbourne’s distribution industry was located in the city’s western world. The proposed airport is on farmland the state government would have to rezone as commercial and commercial, and could compulsorily acquire it if it decided to back again the task. Cardinia Shire councillor Ray Brown, the region is included in whose Port Ward of the proposed site, said there have been mixed feelings among locals.
